Garrett County middle and high schools offer opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills through involvement in school-based and county/state level student government organizations. Each school has an advisor and organization with the intent to extend some leadership training and opportunities to elementary level students as SGA develops and grows. Students participate in a number of school-based activities to promote positive school culture, provide appropriate activities for students, seek to improve the community through service projects, and advocate for students at the local, county, and state level.
Garrett County Association of Student Councils or GCASC is a county-wide organization that provides a forum for students in middle and high school to join together as they share ideas and concerns. The group currently meets one time a month at Perkins Restaurant. While any student is encouraged to attend, each school is asked to provide 4 delegates to this council who commit to attending 50% of the meetings. Each school gives a report of their activities and the group discusses various ideas, projects, etc. at each meeting. The Student Member on the Board of Education or SMOB also attends these meetings and provides updates relating to Board of Education meetings and business.
NOTE: Links will soon be available that include all meeting dates, links to resources and MSDE/MASC as well as minutes and agendas of meetings.
