A delegation of students from Garrett County Public Schools and Allegany County Public Schools represented the westernmost region of Maryland at the Saturday, February 11, 2017, Maryland Association of Student Councils Legislative Session. The theme for this year's event was "MASC Superheroes: League of Leaders." The delegation left Garrett county at 5:30 a.m. for the daylong event, returning home at approximately 8:00 p.m. Over 400 students attended this year's event which was sponsored by Clarksburg High School in Montgomery County. Advisors from Garrett and Allegany counties accompanied the students - Mrs. Kara Kennell (ACPS), Mrs. Tammy Twigg (ACPS), Ms. Y. Michelle Harman (GCPS), and Ms. Amy Rowan (GCPS).
During the Legislative Session, students participated in General Assembly meetings which consisted of Student Member on the Board speeches and Q & A Session, examination and debate of House and Senate bills (HB 56, HB 7, HB 90. SB 232, and SB 78), Officer Reports, Updates on Events, and MASC Platform Review to name some of the business conducted. Students also attended Workshop Sessions on a wide variety of topics based upon their experience with MASC and legislative process. Advisors participated in the workshops as well and special advisor events.
Upcoming events for MASC include a February 18th Executive Board meeting, Feb. 27-March 1 Advocacy Days in Annapolis, and MASC Convention sponsored by ACPS in Ocean City from April 5 through April 7, 2017.
