James Crowder, First Energy Manager of External Affairs, presented a $1000 check to Mr. John Hummel, principal, and Jessica Lieberman, science teacher, at Southern Middle School, for the First Energy STEM Classroom Grant. With this grant money, the 7th grade students will be working on a Wind Energy for the Win! Project. Students will be receiving kits for constructing windmills and participating in cross curricular activities touching on all core subjects such as Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language. Thanks to Exelon, the students will also be visiting the Windmills at Eagle Rock Station to see the windmills and learn how they are monitored and operated with wind energy. In the Spring the students will be participating in a Wind Energy Fair to show off their projects.
