On Wednesday, December 5, 2018, the eighth grade students at Southern Middle School spent the half day of school working to earn service learning hours. The students engage in various activities throughout the year to earn credits. On this day, students participated in areas in which they were interested. Some students participated in making fishing kits, putting together items for sewing kits, constructing toy tops from recycled materials, and melting old crayons to make them new again. These items will be placed in Operation Christmas Child boxes. Other students chose to make dog biscuits that will be sent to local shelters. Lisa Baker spoke with the students on ways in which they could be involved with the local shelters to earn hours in the future. One group of students participated in putting together materials for a do-it-yourself craft kit for children and made reindeer food. Michelle Ross, from GOBA, joined the group in appreciation of their help. She will see that these items will be distributed in our community as part of A Great Small Town Christmas celebration beginning the weekend of December 7th.
