Receiving Senior Class Information:

In an effort to improve communication between the school and families, the high school has created parent email groups. We now have the ability to send out notifications to families based on a whole school format or by grade level. We are striving to send out SGHS news once a week to parent/guardian email addresses. Please direct any questions or email address updates to the main office.
If you are interested in receiving information throughout the school year regarding college and scholarship information, and other important senior related news please make sure you email is updated with the main office.

Senior Class Clothing Orders:

Senior clothing paper orders are due August 31 to Ms. Zumpano. Please contact Ms. Zumpano with questions. Senior clothing order forms can be picked up from Ms. Zumpano in Room 1252. Seniors also received their order forms last week.

Senior Panoramic and Graduation Supply Meeting:

November 8 during Advisory period in the Gym, the class panoramic will be taken and Jostens will be here to distribute and discuss graduation supply ordering.
All seniors should bring the panoramic form and money on November if they are purchasing the class panoramic picture. Seniors can turn in panoramic orders and money to Ms. Zumpano also. Questions, see Ms. Zumpano.
Parents and guardians can order graduation items by going to Jostens website at or by calling 1-800-Jostens. GRADUATION ORDERS SHOULD BE MADE BEFORE DECEMBER 24.

Class Fundraisers:

Class fundraisers are used to help with class activities:
  • fall homecoming
  • bowling night
  • movie night
  • end of year picnic
  • graduation ceremony
  • charity donation
  • school donation (after prom, stage curtains, window screens, etc.)
  • senior trip
*****We need EVERYONE to participate!***** Each senior will be given 2 tickets to sell. Extra tickets are available.

BIG BUCKS BINGO........November 3 starting at 1pm at the Oakland Elks. Cost is $25, $30 at the door. Doors open at 11am. There will also be tips, auction/raffle and food. To purchase a ticket, see any senior or contact Maria Zumpano at 301-337-9447
LITTLE CAESARS PIZZA.....Orders due by November 2. Delievery will be November 20.

Senior Class Trip:

Information about the senior trip will be discussed in early fall and voted by the senior class.
The class of 2019 senior trip will be held on May 17-18, 2019. The trip will be to Kings Dominion, Escape Room and FUN Land. Students interested in going on the trip should sign up with Ms. Zumpano.

Qualifications for attending the senior trip:
  • passing all classes
  • no obligations
  • acceptable attendance and behavior
  • completed service learning
  • fundraiser expectation met
  • on track for graduation
*$25 Deposit due December 14 to Ms. Zumpano. Seating is limited.

Senior Yearbook and School Picture Information

For more information concerning the senior yearbook and school pictures go to the yearbook page.
Baby Pictures: The yearbook staff needs a baby picture from every senior. Pictures can be from the age of 6 months to 5 years old. Pictures can be emailed to Ms. Zumpano at or pictures can be dropped off to Ms. Zumpano at the school. Printed pictures will be returned.
Senior Pictures: Seniors should stop and see Ms. Zumpano to pick out their pictures. The yearbook staff needs a formal and casual pose for the yearbook. The formal pose is also for the hallway composite. The staff needs them by December 21. After December 21, the yearbook staff will pick the picture. Seniors turning in casual pictures from an outside school photographer should get their picture into Ms. Zumpano by January 4.

Important Senior Year Dates:

Senior Parent Meeting--August 27, 7pm in the cafeteria. This is an informational meeting for parents and guardians. As much information about senior year will be distributed and discussed.
Clothing Sales—Orders and Payments Due to Ms. Zumpano by August 31. Orders can be placed through Ms. Zumpano or online. See section above for more information.
Senior Class Meeting for Graduation Supplies and Panoramic Picture--November 8 during Advisory. For more information about this meeting or the panoramic picture, see section above.

Big Bucks Bingo Fundraiser--Saturday, November 3. This is the senior class main fundraiser. For more information see section above.
Bowling Night--Friday, Saturday or Sunday--in December. Seniors must sign up with Ms. Zumpano
Movie Night--Friday, Saturday or Sunday--in January or February 1, 2, or 3. Seniors must sign up with Ms. Zumpano
CARC Night--Anytime in March. Seniors must sign up with Ms. Zumpano

Yearbook Payments--Go to the yearbook page. Yearbooks must be paid for online through Jostens website. No cash or check payments may be collected by the school.
Attendance Appeal Letters due May 3 to Mrs. Friend in the Attendance Office.
School Obligations due May 24 to Mrs. Cathell in the Main Office.

Graduation Practice--May 29, 9am in SHS Gym--ALL SENIORS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND
Senior Picnic/Parade--After Graduation Practice (if you need a ride to the picnic, see Ms. Zumpano) Permission slip for the picnic must be returned to Ms. Zumpano by May 1.
Senior Awards--May 30, 7pm in the cafeteria. Dress in nice clothes: no jeans, shorts, or sweats.
Graduation--June 1, 10am--Seniors report by 8:30am. For more information on graduation, see section below.

Parents and guardians can order graduation items by going to Jostens website at or by calling 1-800-Jostens. GRADUATION ORDERS SHOULD BE MADE BEFORE DECEMBER 24.
Garrett County Public Schools announces that both high schools will conduct graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2019 on Saturday, June 1, at the CARC (Community Aquatic and Recreational Center) on the campus of Garrett College. Southern High School’s graduation ceremony will be held at 10am.
**Family and friends attending the 2019 graduation ceremony at the CARC should arrive early.
The CARC doors will be closed at 9:50 to prepare for the ceremony processional. Doors will then be opened once all seniors are seated for the ceremony.**

GRADUATION PICTURES--LifeTouch will be photograph the graduation ceremony. To access the pictures go
GRADUATION VIDEO--The graduation ceremony will be video recorded and copies will be available at a cost of $10. Payment should be made at the end of the ceremony at designated areas.

GRADUATION DRESS CODE FOR GRADUATES--Dress code form must be turned in to Ms. Zumpano.
Boys: Dark dress slacks, dark socks and dark dress/casual shoes (no athletic or running shoes, no work boots), shirt and tie, red cap and gown. Dark means—black, brown, or blue.

Girls: Any color dress or skirt/top, white, nude, silver or black dress/casual shoes (no athletic or running shoes, no flip flops). Sandals are allowed but they must secure behind the ankle.

Nothing extra should be hung, pinned or attached in any way to either the cap or gown OTHER THAN academic cords, medals and stoles received at senior awards.

Do Not decorate the top of your cap.

The cap should be placed on the head so that the mortarboard is level. Caps are never worn on the back of the head tilted upward. The front of the cap is indicated on the inside of the crown. The tassel is worn on the right side of the mortarboard. After the diplomas have been awarded and at the rehearsed signal, the tassels will be shifted to the left side of the cap. WRITE YOUR NAME IN YOUR CAP!

ARRIVAL TIME--Seniors should arrive at the CARC by 8:30am. Sign in with Guidance Counselors. Make sure you have followed dress code as outlined in your graduation handbook and discussed in the senior meeting in April. Dress code information is also listed above. Have your picture taken in your cap/gown.
