OAKLAND ROTARY CLUB – DEADLINE IS APRIL 5 – The Oakland Rotary Club will award two $1,000 scholarship for seniors graduating from either Northern or Southern High Schools. One of the scholarships is for attendance at a vocational or technical school and the other is for a student who plans to attend a college or university. MISS UTILITY/DISTRICT ONE CALL SCHOLARSHIP – DUE APRIL 5 – One student in Western Maryland will receive a one time $1,008 scholarship. Applicants must be high school seniors on track to graduate in the Spring of 2019 and plan to attend a post-secondary school in the Fall of 2019. Applicants will be reviewed on the merit of their extracurricular activities, personal essay, letter of recommendation and high school transcript. MINDS IN MOTION SCHOLAR-ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS 12Noon on APRIL 12- The Allstate Foundation recognizes those who have excelled on the playing field and in the classroom with a $1,000 scholarship and will award at least one student from each of the nine MPSSA districts this year. Applicants must have a 3.25 unweighted overall gpa and have participated in interscholastic athletic activities sponsored by MPSSAA during their high school careers. GARRETT REGIONAL MEDICAL STAFF SCHOLARSHIPS - DEADLINE TO RETURN TO THE GUIDANCE OFFICE IS APRIL 15 – Garrett Regional Medical Center is offering $500 scholarships to seniors at Southern and Northern Garrett High Schools. Requirements include: cumulative gpa of 2.5 or higher and planning to major in a health related field at a two or four year college. GARRETT COLLEGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS – PRIORITY DEADLINE OF APRIL 15 - High School Seniors can apply for scholarships that can assist in costs of books, housing, and transportation while attending Garrett College. Applicants must: be a senior at Northern or Southern Garrett High School; supply a copy of current high school transcript; have proof of acceptance to an accredited secondary institution; be pursuing a degree in Environmental Science or Wildlife Management; provide a letter of recommendation from a school or county principal, teacher, or civic leader. The Hickory Advisory Committee will select the scholarship winner, and the award will be presented at the Sr. Awards Program of the recipient’s school.
HEEC PLANETARIUM SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE TO RETURN TO GUIDANCE IS APRIL 15. The Hickory Environmental Center Planetarium is offering a $250 Scholarship to a Northern or Southern High School graduating senior. Applicants must: supply a copy of current high school transcript; supply proof of acceptance to an accredited secondary institution; be pursuing a degree in Engineering with special consideration given to Aerospace, Astrophysics etc.; provide a letter of recommendation from a school or county official. The Hickory Advisory Committee will select the scholarship winner, and the award will be presented at the Senior Awards Program at the recipient’s school.
CHRIS LANTZ AMERICAN EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 15- The Chris Lantz Memorial Fund will award one $2,000 scholarship to a graduating Southern Garrett High School senior planning to attend a four year college or university. Eligible candidates will be selected on the following criteria: must be a natural born U.S. citizen, must hold at least a 3.7 weighted GPA; must have held a position of leadership in the school or community; must be involved in community activities; must maintain a physically active lifestyle. DONALD LIPSCOMB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - RETURN TO GUIDANCE BY APRIL 16- A $500 scholarship is offered to one graduating senior from Southern Garrett High School who plans to major full time in education and who has at least an 85% grade point average. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.
KATIE DEROSA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 19. An award of $500 will be presented to an outstanding male and female senior cross country/track distance runner living in Allegany and Garrett counties, MD, and Hampshire, Hardy or Mineral counties, WV. The student-athletes chosen to receive these scholarships must have participated in cross country or distance events in track (1600 or 3200) for at least two years at the high school level and must have been accepted to a college or university at time of application. The recipients must have a GPA of at least 2.8 and plan to participate in either cross country or track at the collegiate level. Leadership qualities, creative experiences, financial need, letters of recommendation, and involvement in extra-curricular and community activities will be considered. GARRETT COUNTY STEPS TO BETTER HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP – DUE APRIL 20- GC Steps to Better Health Scholarship offers $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue a degree in a health care field. Qualifications include: a cumulative gpa of 2.5 or higher, plan to pursue a degree in a health related field, demonstration of character and leadership as well as involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities. Preference will be given to students who attended and/or volunteered at the Garrett County Health Fair in April(applicants must check in at the registration table). JUNIOR WOMAN'S CIVIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 26 - The Junior Woman's Civic Club is offering a one-time $1000 scholarship to one graduating senior from Southern High School and who plans to pursue a post secondary education at either a vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university. Application criteria includes: service, leadership, activities, academic performance and financial need. The scholarship is to be used toward tuition, books or course required supplies. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.
JAMIE AND JAY CALLIS MEMORIAL VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 30 - A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior at Southern Garrett High School who is on track to graduate and plans to enroll in a technical program to pursue a career in Automotive, Computer Service, or Home Building Trades. Eligible candidates must have a minimum 80% cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need. Additionally, applicants must be a completer in one of the following Career and Technology Education Programs: Automotive; Brick, Block & Stone; Carpentry; Computer/Network; Drafting; Electronics; or Machine Tool. AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE TO SUBMIT TO GUIDANCE OFFICE IS APRIL 30 – A $500 scholarship will be awarded a senior at Southern Garrett High School for excellence in academics and citizenship. The student must be planning to attend a college or university on a full-time basis in pursuit of a four-year degree. Applicants do not have to be related to a Legion member to apply for this award. Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria: academic goals and achievements, community service and activities, financial need, and letters of recommendation. Preference will be given to a student who has not received other scholarships.
SOUTHERN GARRETT HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 30 - Two Southern Garrett High School Seniors will receive a scholarship in the amount of $4,000, $1,000 per year for four years, providing a minimum gpa of 2.5 is maintained. Criteria for selection includes: financial need, at least a 75% gpa; plans to attend a 4- year college or university; participation in school and community activities; summary of your academic and career goals, and submitting a 250-word essay addressing the statement "What Southern High School means to me." ALPHA ALPHA CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY GRANT-IN-AID – DEADLINE IS MAY 1 – This is a $300 Grant-in-Aid established by Alpha Alpha Chapter to assist a young woman working toward a degree in teacher education. Application is available in the Guidance Office.
ANDREW S. WOODS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS MAY 1 –Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to four seniors at Southern Garrett High School in memory of Andrew Woods, sponsored by the WGW Benefit Golf Tournament. Eligibility criteria includes: Enrollment in a 4-year college or university; has a minimum 3.0 cumulative gpa; has been involved in athletics or cheerleading for at least two years during high school; demonstrate financial need; completion of application and two 250-word essays. OAKLAND ELKS STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD – DEADLINE IS MAY 1 The Oakland Elks will award a $1,000 scholarship to two high school seniors who demonstrate characteristics of scholarship, service, community and school involvement. BOWSER MEMORIAL EMERGENCY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP – DUE MAY 15 – Allegany and Garrett Counties Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association anticipate awarding one scholarship in Garrett County for a high school senior who volunteers at local fire departments, EMS department or hospital facility. Individuals with disabilities desiring to further their education and individuals pursuing training in the provision of services to persons with disabilities are eligible to apply. KIDS’ CHANCE SCHOLARSHIP – THERE IS NO DEADLINE – Kids’ Chance of Maryland, Inc. sponsors scholarships for children of catastrophically or fatally injured workers to complete their college, technical school, or post-graduate education. Scholarships are awarded on a semester basis and vary depending on the needs and educational expenses of the student.
