JANICE M. SCOTT MEMORIAL FUND – DEADLINE IS MARCH 31 - The Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to honor Mrs. Scott who was among the 125 individuals who perished in Pentagon during the attacks by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001. The Fund will award 3-5 $2,500 one time scholarships. Criteria include: US Citizen or permanent resident of US; GPA of 3.0/equivalent or higher (out of a 4.0 scale); High School Senior who will matriculate full-time at a US accredited four-year college or university within the fifty states or District of Columbia starting at the beginning of the fall semester or quarter of 2014; Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services or other extracurricular activities; Combined adjusted income of the parents cannot exceed $100,000.

SOUTHERN GARRETT FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES SCHOLARSHIP POSTMARK DEADLINE OF MARCH 31- Southern Garrett Fellowship of Christian Athletes is sponsoring a scholarship for 2018 graduating seniors. Criteria includes: academics, community involvement, FCA leadership, Athletic Achievement, Extra-curricular activities, church involvement, Fellowship of Christian Athletes involvement, faith walk, athletic participation, and 2 references. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

FRANK H. EBERLY JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 1
Graduating high school seniors in Garrett and Allegany counties can apply for this $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the family of Frank Eberly and the Masonic Lodge. Criteria reviewed includes: cumulative grade point average; community service; involvement in extra curricular activities; and employment while attending high school. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

VIP WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 1 – Sponsored by Visionary Integration Professionals awards a $2,500 scholarship to women enrolled in or accepted into a two or four-year college and planning a career in computer science, information technology, management information systems, computer engineering, or another related field. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, and respond to an essay question. Level of participation in community service and extracurricular activities will be considered. Application is available in the Guidance Office.

SPIRIT AWARD SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 1- The Zaching Agains Cancer Foundaiton is offering six $2,500 scholarship to Maryland High School Students in the 2018 graduating class who will be attending a two or four year college. Criteria include: 2.0 gpa; senior on track to graduate in 2018; plan to attend two or four year college; must have overcome some significant hardship, medical challenge, and/or family issue relating to cancer during their life; completion of form. MARYLAND MULTICULTURAL COALITION SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 2- The MMC is offering a scholarship for students who are interested in the field of education. Applicants must be a resident of Maryland; have earned a 3.5 unweighted gpa; be eligible to graduate June 2016; provide proof of acceptance in a 2 or 4 year undergraduate program; intend to teach P-12 in Maryland; and demonstrate financial need. The application is available in the Guidance Office.

MINDS IN MOTION SCHOLAR-ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS 12Noon on APRIL 13- The Allstate Foundation recognizes those who have excelled on the playing field and in the classroom with a $1,000 scholarship and will award at least one student from each of the nine MPSSA districts this year. Applicants must have a 3.25 unweighted overall gpa and have participated in interscholastic athletic activities sponsored by MPSSAA during their high school careers. ROGER P. GLOTFELTY AWARD - DEADLINE TO RETURN APPLICATIONS TO GUIDANCE IS APRIL 15. Oakland-Mtn. Lake Lions Club will award a $1,000. scholarship to a full-time Southern Garrett High School student, grades 9-12. Criteria for selection includes: demonstration of positive attitude and citizenship skills in the school and community; serves as a visible role model for other young people, has earned a minimum of 100 hours of verified and documented community service hours with at least three different service activities. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

DAVID LIVENGOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 15 – This scholarship was established by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 99 to honor Deputy Livengood who was killed in the line of duty. Up to three scholarships may be awarded. Applicants must be in the top 50% of their graduating class and prove financial need. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

HEEC COORDINATORS SCHOLARSHIP- DEADLINE TO RETURN TO GUIDANCE IS APRIL 15. The Hickory Environmental Center is offering a $250 scholarship. Applicants must: be a senior at Northern or Southern Garrett High School; supply a copy of current high school transcript; have proof of acceptance to an accredited secondary institution; be pursuing a degree in Environmental Science or Wildlife Management; provide a letter of recommendation from a school or county principal, teacher, or civic leader. The Hickory Advisory Committee will select the scholarship winner, and the award will be presented at the Sr. Awards Program of the recipient’s school.

HEEC PLANETARIUM SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE TO RETURN TO GUIDANCE IS APRIL 15. The Hickory Environmental Center Planetarium is offering a $250 Scholarship to a Northern or Southern High School graduating senior. Applicants must: supply a copy of current high school transcript; supply proof of acceptance to an accredited secondary institution; be pursuing a degree in Engineering with special consideration given to Aerospace, Astrophysics etc.; provide a letter of recommendation from a school or county official. The Hickory Advisory Committee will select the scholarship winner, and the award will be presented at the Senior Awards Program at the recipient’s school.

JOSEPH FOX, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - POSTMARK DEADLINE IS APRIL 15. The State of Maryland International Reading Association Council will award several $2000 scholarships to graduating seniors in Maryland high schools. Recipients of this scholarship must attend an accredited educational institution of their choice and pursue a degree in reading/ or a reading-related field and a teaching career. Selection criteria includes: verification of graduation from high school; acceptance and enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university; pursue a major in education; document and verify current or previous community service in education-related activities; two letters of recommendation, a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and a written statement describing qualifications. JUNIOR WOMAN'S CIVIC CLUB SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 16 - The Junior Woman's Civic Club is offering a one-time $500 scholarship to one graduating senior from Southern High School and who plans to pursue a post secondary education at either a vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university. Application criteria includes: service, leadership, activities, academic performance and financial need. The scholarship is to be used toward tuition, books or course required supplies. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

AVEREY BRIDGES MEMORIAL SCHOLAR ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 16- A $1000 scholarship is offered in memory of Averey Bridges, a student athlete at Mountain Ridge High School. To be eligible, applicants must: have lettered in one or more varsity sports, be of high moral character and show leadership skills; show involvement in their community, have at least a 3.5 gpa taking honors and AP classes(National Honor Society membership is desired), and write a short essay on the importance of compassion for others. Application is available in the Guidance Office.

ELIZABETH ANN “LIBBY” FRIST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS APRIL 20 - Gram’s Promise Charitable Foundation, Inc. established this school to recognize Maryland high school seniors for their activism and leadership among their peers in the fight against tobacco use. Seniors who are tobacco-free and have demonstrated a commitment to anti-smoking advocacy are encouraged to apply. Minimum award is $250. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

OAKLAND ROTARY CLUB – DEADLINE IS APRIL 20 – The Oakland Rotary Club will award two $1,000 scholarship for seniors graduating from either Northern or Southern High Schools. One of the scholarships is for attendance at a vocational or technical school and the other is for a student who plans to attend a college or university. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

KATIE DEROSA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE IS APRIL 20. An award of $500 will be presented to an outstanding male and female senior cross country/track distance runner living in Allegany and Garrett counties, MD, and Hampshire, Hardy or Mineral counties, WV. The student-athletes chosen to receive these scholarships must have participated in cross country or distance events in track (1600 or 3200) for at least two years at the high school level and must have been accepted to a college or university at time of application. The recipients must have a GPA of at least 2.8 and plan to participate in either cross country or track at the collegiate level. Leadership qualities, creative experiences, financial need, letters of recommendation, and involvement in extra-curricular and community activities will be considered. The application is available in the Guidance Office.

SPENCER GRAHAM WOODMEN OF THE WORLD – DEADLINE IS APRIL 30 – Woodmen of the World sponsors a scholarship to seniors with an active WOW insurance policy within MD, DC or Delaware. Applications require a short essay. Factors considered include family income, academic achievement, leadership activities and acceptance by an accredited post-secondary institution. Application is available in the Guidance Office.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - DEADLINE TO SUBMIT TO GUIDANCE OFFICE IS APRIL 30 A $500 scholarship will be awarded a senior at Southern Garrett High School for excellence in academics and citizenship. The student must be planning to attend a college or university on a full-time basis in pursuit of a four-year degree. Applicants do not have to be related to a Legion member to apply for this award. Selection of the recipient will be based on the following criteria: academic goals and achievements, community service and activities, financial need, and letters of recommendation. Preference will be given to a student who has not received other scholarships.

ANGIE M. HOUTZ MEMORIAL FUND - DEADLINE IS APRIL 30 - Given in memory of Angie Houtz, a Naval analyst, killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack at the Pentagon. The $3,000 scholarship will be given to a student who plans to attend a Maryland two or four year public college. Eligible candidates must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Selection will be based on academic achievements and community service. SOUTHERN GARRETT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION – DEADLINE IS APRIL 30 –The Southern Garrett Athletic Association is offering two $500 scholarships, one to a female athlete and one to a male athlete. Applicants must be a senior athlete attending Southern who plans to attend an accredited postsecondary education program. The applicant or family must be dues paying members of the athletic association.

GARRETT COLLEGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS – PRIORITY DEADLINE OF MAY 1 - High School Seniors can apply for scholarships that can assist in costs of books, housing, and transportation while attending Garrett College. This is a different scholarship from the Garrett County Scholarship. More information and applications are available online at www.garrettcollege.edu/form-foundation-scholarship.php.

LALITTA NASH McKAIG FOUNDATION - DEADLINE IS MAY 31 - This Foundation is offering scholarships to students from Garrett, Allegany, Mineral, Hampshire, Bedford or Somerset counties based on financial need. The student must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university in the United States. Students at vocational or technical schools are not eligible. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

HORATIO ALGER NATIONAL CAREER & TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – DEADLINE IS JUNE 15 – High School seniors planning to pursue training in a career or technical education program and are on track to graduate in 2016 can apply online for scholarships sponsored by the Horatio Alger Association. Award amounts can range up to $2,500. This program provides financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarships are awarded on a semester basis and vary depending on the needs and educational expenses of the student.
