Game teaches students the basics of investing in an ever-changing world
Winners were recently recognized by Mr. Rob Sharps, retired financial adviser with First United Wealth Management, sponsor of the Stock Market Game at Southern High School for the Spring, 2018, competition.
The Stock Market Game requires the students to participate in a 10-week game organized by the Maryland Council on Economic Education (MCEE) and sponsored locally by First United Wealth Management. Rob Sharps, retired financial advisor, presents investment concepts, such as risk vs. reward and diversification, and compares strategies for investing for the Stock Market Game with those used in real life. First United has sponsored teams locally for over 23 years and has seen multiple State and Regional winners from Southern Garrett High School. For the Spring 2018 competition, the local teams participated with 276 other teams in the North Region of Maryland and 730 teams within the state. Twelve teams at Southern Garrett placed in the top 20 teams in the North Region. Their teacher, Athena Wilson, also played the Stock Market Game, completing the competition in second place in the State for the Adult Division.
