Southern High's Student Newspaper Gains Technology

Last Updated on Dec 15, 2016 at 1:55pm | Southern Garrett High School

Christmas has come early this year to the staff of The Acorn, Southern Garrett High School's student newspaper. The Southern Garrett High Alumni Association (SGHSAA), the Board of Education's Information Technology Department, and Southern Garrett High School worked in conjunction to fund 12 new laptops with 22" monitors for the school's journalism program.

"The wide screen monitors have expanded the journalism staff's ability to edit documents and photography and enhanced the digital layout of the newspaper," newspaper advisor Heather Savage said. "This computer upgrade couldn't have come at a better time. The Acorn will celebrate its 90th Anniversary next year featuring new, sleek equipment. The staff members feel like real journalists and that their work is valued." Newspaper staff members sell advertising each year to pay for publishing costs and upgrades to computers and cameras. These monies were coupled with a generous donation by the alumni association and funds from the Board of Education.

"On behalf of our members, the Alumni Association Board is pleased to make this contribution toward the purchase of new computers and monitors for the SHS journalism class," President Rob Sharps (Class of '67) said. "Due to the generosity of our membership, we are able to provide support in the classroom, especially when our funds enable the Board of Education to leverage other resources to meet urgent instructional needs. This was one of those opportunities."
