County Envirothon Held on April 27, 2016

The Garrett County Envirothon Competition was held on April 27, 2016, at the Maryland 4-H Environmental Education and Camping Center in Swanton, Maryland.  The full day of academic, environmental competition was preceded by a full day of training which was held on April 12th at the Hickory Environmental Education Center.  Teachers/Coaches and teams from Northern and Southern High Schools trained and competed in this year’s event. 

Resource trainers from area agencies provided volunteer training and mentoring throughout the year for students and provided the training on April 12th and testing for competition day on April 27th.  The five categories of competition are wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soils, and a special 5th issue which is selected each year.  Resource personnel who assisted with this year’s training/competition included Jody Johnson, Alan Klotz, and Kenny Wampler for AQUATICS; Jessica Aronhalt, Carl Robinette, Butch Miller, and Shaun Sanders for SOILS; Rande Brown, Rob Harvey, and Kevin Dodge for WILDLIFE, Tim Cole, Melissa Nash, Patrick Gates, and Will Williams for FORESTRY; and Ann Sherrard for the 5th ISSUE which was INVASIVE SPECIES.  Coaches included Rebecca Kenyon-Sisler, Frank Rizzo, and Erin Coffman.  Special assistance was provided by Debbie Brenneman, Sharon Hoover, Daymond Schmuck, and Jason Shank of Hickory Environmental Education Center, as well as Scott Germain and Cody Wilt (GCPS Food Service), Michelle Harman (GCPS Secondary Education event organizer), Kristi Winters (GCPS Secondary Education), and Mike Brady and Ann Sherrard from the 4-H Center.
Student competitors included Southern High School Stoneflies 1: Tyler Bowers, Aaron Graham, Jeremy Martin, Alex Roy, and Brent Wright.  Southern High School Stoneflies 2:  Kaylee Baker, Mariah Beeman, Elayne Bell, Brodie Robison, Duncan Smith, and team alternate – Heather Frick.  Northern High School had three competing teams: The Northern Lights 1 Green Team included Ben Beeman, Katie Carpenter, Kylie Frantz, and Kyle Klotz;  Northern Lights 2 Blue Team included Garret Baker, Jarrett Kelly, Jordan Short, and Robert Walker; Northern Lights 3 Yellow Team included Lindsay Brewer, Dean James, Dylan McCann, Nick Opel, and Summer Shaper.

Category winners this year were WILDLIFE – Northern Lights 1; AQUATICS – Northern Lights 1; FORESTRY – Northern Lights 1; SOILS – Northern Lights 1, and 5th ISSUE – Northern Lights 1.  The overall ranking of the teams was 3rd Place – Stoneflies 1, 2nd Place – Northern Lights 2, and 1st Place – Northern Lights 1.  The winning team will continue to train to prepare for the June 22nd - 23rd  Maryland State Competition to be held at Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg.  This is also the site of next year’s national competition.  This year’s winning team will travel to Ontario to represent Maryland.
