Each year, students enrolled in the army JROTC program take part in the cadet physical fitness challenge. This five event activity measures cadets' fitness against the President's Physical Fitness program. Those cadets scoring a 50% or higher in each of the five events are recognized with the JROTC physical fitness award.
This semester, two cadets from Southern Garrett high school, ninth graders Venessa Calling and Kayla Harris, scored high enough to receive the JROTC physical fitness award and the national physical fitness award from their JROTC program. Calling scored 350 of 500 or 70% while Harris scored 385 of 500 or 77%. In addition to her award, Harris also received a medal for being the highest scoring female on the first attempt.
