The National History Club at Southern Garrett High School sponsored a field trip to the annual ceremony at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA on the 13th anniversary of the tragic event this past Thursday Sept. 11, 2014. One hundred and five students, grades 9-12 rode the 97 minutes on three school buses to the Memorial for the ceremony.
The ceremony included a presentation of the names of the 44 crew and passengers who lost their lives that day. Bells of Remembrance were rand after family and friends of those lost read the names. Gordon Felt, President of the Families of Flight 93 Group, presented the Flight 93 National Park Memorial staff with the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously in honor of the heroic sacrifices made by the citizens aboard Flight 93. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett made comments and the ceremony ended with the former Speaker of the House of Representatives J. Dennis Hastert who served during the crisis.
Representative Hastert told an inspiring story of how the nation’s capitol was in jeopardy that day and had it not been for the sacrifice of those heroic citizens on Flight 93, the Capitol may have been destroyed. Hastert presented the American flag that flew over the Capitol Building on that fateful day to the Flight 93 National Memorial, concluding that the symbol of the American people, the flag, would have been destroyed if not for the heroism of the passengers of Flight 93.
“I think our students came away with a new appreciation with what more and more seems like a far-away lesson out of a history book." National History Club sponsor Dave Bender said. "I saw a lot of somber faces and even some tears were shed by students.”
WJAC-TV, as well as many national news sources, covered the event at the Flight 93 Memorial. Southern Garrett High School students were interviewed and appeared in a news report covering the event by Channel 6.
