End of the Year Instructional Activities

Administrative Procedure

In order to bring the school year to a meaningful close the following procedures will apply to the various schools under the control of the County Public Schools.

Final Examinations

Elementary Schools (Grades K to 5)

Appropraite instructional activities will be carried out by the instructional staff in accordance with the plans submitted to the Assistant Superintendent in Curriculm and Instruction.

Middle Schools (Grades 6 to 8)

In the sixth and seventh grades a final examination which will cover only the final marking period will be given in the five major content areas -- reading, language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies. This final examination will be averaged along with other grades earned during the final reporting period. This final examination should not carry a disproportionate weight toward the determination of the grade for the final reporting period.

In the eighth grade a final comprehensive examination of all subject matter material will be given in the five major content areas -- reading, language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies. The final examination will be averaged along with other grades earned during the final reporting period. This final examination should not carry a disproportionate weight toward the determination of the grade for the final reporting period.

It should be noted that for some Level IV Special Education students (those utilizing the S.P.H. or M.R. Curricula) final examinations may be inappropriate. However, a final assessment of progres toward attainment of I.E.P. objectives would be appropriate.

Secondary Schools (Grades 9 to 12)

A comprehensive, final examination will be given at the end of all classes be they of one semester's legnth or two semester's legnth. The final comprehensive examination grade will count as 20% of the final grade of any particular class.

All final examinations will be graded by the teacher(s) involved and the scores identifiably recorded in the grade book of the teacher, which is collected at the end of the school year. The grade also will be separately recorded on the report card.

It should be noted that for some Level IV Special Education students (those utilizing the S.P.H. or M.R. Curricula) final examinations may be inappropriate. However, a final assessment of progress toward attainment of I.E.P. objectives would be appropriate.

School Schedule

Students would be dismissed on the same schedule as a regular haIf-day closing on each of the last three days of school. Staff would remain for the regular working day hours.

The schools generally would follow the time frame as outlined in the schedules which are following. Of course, the specific times would vary from school to school in order to facilitate student arrival and dismissal.

The time periods which are labelled "Teacher Time" and the last staff work day would enable teachers to score final examinations, prepare and post final grades, and complete regular and end-of-the-year assignments and chores.

At the high and middle schools, students will be permitted to make up final exams only for the following reasons: death in the immediate family, illness of student, court summons, or quarantine. Students will be required to complete all final exams no later than the final teacher work day unless one of the above reasons precludes this from occurring. In such cases, arrangements must be made with the principal.

Report cards will be mailed home after the final teacher work day.
