MARYLAND AND GARRETT COUNTY GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Board Policy
The requirements for graduation from Garrett County High School, summarized below, are those of the State of Maryland. (See: Title 13A, State Board of Education, Subtitle .03 General Instruction Program, Chapter .02 Graduation Requirements for Public High Schools in Maryland, for specific details and exceptions.)
DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS
1. ENROLLMENT - The student shall satisfactorily complete four years of approved study beyond the eighth grade.
2. COMPETENCY - A student shall demonstrate competencies in five areas of human activity:
A. BASIC SKILLS - The Maryland Functional Reading Test, The Maryland Functional Mathematics Test, The Maryland Writing Test
B. CITIZENSHIP - The Maryland Test of Citizenship Skills
C. ARTS AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - Participate in the approved arts and physical activity programs.
D. WORLD OF WORK - Participate in the approved program of world of work activities.
E. SURVIVAL SKILLS - Participate in the approved program of survival skills activities.
3. | CREDIT REQUIREMENTS (Class of 94, 95, 96) -- A student shall have earned a minimum of twenty (20) credits at the completion of grades nine through twelve. At least four of these 20 required credits shall be earned after completion of the eleventh (11th) grade. |
CREDIT REQUIREMENTS (Beginning with Class of '97) -- A student shall have earned a minimum of twenty-one (21) credits at the completion of grades nine through twelve. At least four of these 21 rquired credits shall be earned after the completion of the eleventh (11th) grade. A student must also complete the Student Service Learning program. |

Certificate of Merit
1. ENROLLMENT - Same as general diploma requirements.
2. COMPETENCY - Same as general diploma requirements.

4. ADVANCED COURSE REQUIREMENT - A student must complete at least twelve (12) of the required credits in advanced classes. These are designated "Certificate of Merit" classes at each high school.

Maryland High Sschool Certificate
The certificate shall be awarded only to handicapped students who cannot meet the requirements for a diploma.
1. ENROLLMENT - At least four (4) years beyond grade eight or its age equivalent.
2. SKILLS - Determined by the A.R.D. Committee, with the agreement of the parents, as appropriate for the individual:
To enter the world of work, activity centers, sheltered workshops, supported employment, etc.; or
To act responsible as a citizen; or
To enjoy a fulfilling life.
3. ALTERNATIVE - The student has been enrolled in an educational program for four years beyond grade eight or its age equivalent and has reached age twenty-one.
