TOBACCO-FREE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

Board Policy

The Public Schools of Garrett County recognizes that tobacco use in any form poses a serious health threat to the members of the community. The Board also recognizes the importance of preventing youth tobacco use through the endorsement of healthy role models in a tobacco-free environment. Therefore, effective August 13, 1996, the sale or use of tobacco in any form is prohibited on Public Schools owned/leased property (buildings, grounds, and vehicles) at all times by anyone. Furthermore, employees are prohibited from openly displaying or using any tobacco products while involved in any school activities with students which occur off of Public Schools owned/leased property.

Any employee of the Public Schools found to be in non-compliance with this policy shall be subject to:

       

1.  First Offense: Reprimand by the immediate supervisor, with possible referral to a program for counseling and smoking cessation.
2.  Second Offense: Suspension without pay.
3.  Third or Subsequent Offense: Additional sanctions up to and including termination.

Any non-employee of the Public Schools found to be in non-compliance with this policy shall:

    1. First be given a verbal warning and review of policy.
    2. If non-compliance continues, person shall be asked to leave the premises.
