CHARITY DRIVES

Board Policy

Each year schools are asked to participate in various kinds of charitable endeavors. Some take the form of direct student participation, whereas others involve the distribution of information. As a result of past practice and with the view of allowing some participation in such worthwhile endeavors, the Garrett County Public Schools takes the following position.

Individual school principals, with the assistance of their Faculty Advisory Councils and/or School Improvement Teams, will decide upon:

    1. Allowing direct student participation in the solicitation of funds, goods, or materials. In making a decision regarding participation, schools are to consider the number
of requests, the education connection, and are to limit the use of instructional time for such purposes.

    2. Allowing notices of charity drives to be distributed through the schools. When schools participate in this manner, the school will not be used as a place to collect
        funds.

At the end of each school year, schools will submit a report for Board review which indicates the names of charity drives, the approximate amount of instructional time used to support each charity drive, and any educational connection.
