RETIREE INSURANCE

Administrative Procedure

Effective during the 1996-97 school year through June 30, 2003, the Garrett County Public Schools contributes to the cost of health insurance for qualified former employees in an amount not to exceed $100 per month per retiree. In order to qualify for this post employment benefit a former employee must:

  • have qualified for a regular service retirement under the Maryland State Retirement Agency immediately upon separation from the Garrett County School System,
  • have served at least twenty (20) years with the Garrett County School System immediately preceding retirement,
  • continue as a member of the Board's group health insurance,
  • not be eligible for Medicare/Medicaid benefits.
  • have retired effective July 1, 1995 and prior to July 1, 2003, or have retired effective July 1, 2003 under the Voluntary Retirement Incentive Program (VRIP).

The maximum benefit levels, which will be paid directly to the Board's health insurance provider on a monthly basis, will be as follows:

  • up to $50 per month for those eligible retirees who retired with up to and including 150 unused sick leave days.
  • up to $75 per month for those eligible retirees who retired with between 151 and 200 unused sick leave days.
  • up to $100 per month for those eligible retirees who retired with 201 or more unused sick leave days.
