TEACHER VISITATION

Administrative Procedure

I. THE VISITATION INSTRUMENTS

The instruments to be used during a formal teacher visitation are the Professional Development Record, Form I, or the Professional Development Record, Form II. These instruments are formative instruments which evaluate the process of instruction, not the person doing the instructing.

II. PURPOSES OF THE VISITATION

    A. To help teachers teach better
    B. To allow each teacher to strive for excellence
    C. To promote greater communication and understanding among teachers, teachers and administrators, and teachers and supervisors
    D. To serve as basis for continued self-improvement through a unified team approach

III. RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE VISITATION

Professional growth is the primary responsibility of the individual teacher. The Professional Development Record, Form I or II, is to be used by the teacher and the principal, the assistant principal, the appropriate director, the appropriate supervisor, or a peer teacher. Pre-conferences and post conferences will be planned and implemented mutually by the teacher and the observer. As a part of the process, the teacher may request input from his or her peers and/or other appropriate administrative/supervisory personnel.

V. PROCEDURES FOR THE VISITATION

A. Through a pre-conference requested by the teacher and/or the appropriate administrator/supervisor, the teacher will know that he or she is being formally visited to
observe the educational process occurring in his or her classroom. From this visit will come the Professional Development Record, Form I or II. If neither request a visit,
then the visit can be unannounced with Form II being used by the observer.

B. In a post-conference the teacher will be shown the data collected and/or the comments made on the Professional Development Record, Form I or Form II. From
discussions, mutual conclusions will be drawn for future professional improvement in the educational process and the resources needed to improve this process.

C. All professional Development Records in a teacher's personnel file are confidential and are to be treated as such. The original Professional Development Record must be
submitted to the Director of Personnel to be placed in the teacher's personnel file. Copies of the Record will be kept by the teacher, the observer, and the appropriate
    director or supervisor.
