Board Policy

As a condition of employment with the Public Schools of Garrett County an individual appointed as a superintendent, assistant superintendent director, supervisor, coordinator, pupil personnel worker, principal, or assistant principal shall reside in Garrett County or shall live within a twenty-five (25) mile radius of his/her work assignment. This residency must be established within four (4) months of such appointment. The Board may extend this period for sixty (60) days when a hardship is indicated.

Once an individual accepts such a position and establishes his/her residency under these provisions, should he/she move beyond the limits prescribed he/she would forfeit such position.

An assistant superintendent, director, supervisor, coordinator, pupil personnel worker, principal, or assistant principal may request an exception to the above by directing a letter to the Superintendent of Schools, indicating the reasons for such an exception. Final approval shall rest with the Garrett County Public Schools.

This policy is to become effective October 10, 1985, and is not a condition of employment for the current superintendent, assistant superintendents, directors, supervisors, coordinators, pupil personnel workers, principals, or assistant principals who are living outside of the limits prescribed who establish residency within the prescribed limits. Superintendent, assistant superintendents, directors, supervisors, coordinators, pupil personnel workers, principals, and assistant principals employed prior to February 12, 1981, shall not be penalized for promotion as result of this policy.

If a newly appointed assistant superintendent, director, supervisor, coordinator, pupil personnel worker, principal, or assistant principal fails to comply with this policy, the Public Schools upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools may terminate the assistant superintendent's, director's, supervisor's, coordinator's, pupil personnel worker's, principal's, or assistant principal's employment within sixty (60 days) after providing written notification.
