Board Policy

The Garrett County Board of Education believes that it is essential that the employees working in its school system set the best possible example for students with respect to the illegal use of drugs and abuse of prescription drugs and alcohol. Therefore, the Board will not tolerate any employee illegally manufacturing, dispensing, possessing, or using a controlled dangerous substance or engaging in any illegal activity involving the use of alcohol on or off school premises. Any possession or use of alcohol will not be tolerated on school premises or as part of any school's activities.

Attendant to this policy is the Public Schools's commitment to provide whatever help it can to employees who experience drug and/or alcohol related problems and who voluntarily seek the Board's help before becoming enmeshed in legal or administrative problems related thereto. Furthermore, the Board will extend every cooperation to employees provided that a commitment to abstinence can be demonstrated by satisfactory job performance, a good record of attendance, and employee behavior which communicates through actions, deeds, and teaching that the illegal use of drugs or the abuse of prescription drugs and/or alcohol cannot be encouraged or condoned in any way.

Mandatory standards of conduct for employees relative to the illegal use of drugs or the abuse of prescription drugs and/or alcohol along with procedures used for the application of individual sanctions are described in the accompanying procedure. All employees will be made aware that compliance with this policy and accompanying procedure is a condition of continued employment.
