HEALTHFUL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

Board Policy

Communicable diseases are one of the most common causes of student absenteeism. Therefore, prevention and the control of communicable disease in the school setting is an important goal of school health services. It should be recognized as an essential responsibility of the school health staff.

It is important to realize that methods used to control the spread of communicable diseases in the school setting have limitations. Many diseases have a period of communicability that precede the onset of identifiable symptoms or are without symptoms throughout the entire contagious period. Consequently, efforts to prevent or control the spread of communicable disease must continue on an on-going basis.

Therefore, in accordance with Section 18-201 of the Health General Article, Annotated Code of Maryland and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 10.06.01 the Garrett County Board of Education will work collaboratively with the Garrett County Health Department to control outbreaks of communicable disease.
