PREVENTING SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Administrative Procedure

Any student who feels that he or she has been the victim of sexual harassment should report the alleged act to his or her building principal, assistant principal, teacher, or other school official.  The building principal will be made aware of all complaints and will investigate or assign another administrator to investigate.

(NOTE: If the principal is the individual who has allegedly done the harassing, the complainant shall contact the Supervisor of Pupil Services.)

The administrator investigating the complaint will investigate the incident in a timely and confidential manner. The administrator must listen attentively to what the complainant says, and be sensitive to the feelings involved. The administrator will obtain the names of all witnesses and information surrounding the circumstances which might resolve any questions of fact. The administrator will immediately interview the alleged harasser. The administrator must be equally sensitive to the feelings involved as with the alleged victim. There must be documentation of all interaction with the alleged harasser.

If necessary, the administrator will interview any witnesses, listen attentively and document interaction with the witnesses.

Upon completion of the investigation, the administrator will file a written report with the Superintendent of Schools noting disciplinary actions, if any, which were taken.  It shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent of Schools to review the data and determine what further action, if any, may be appropriate.

When appropriate, students may issue complaints directly to the Superintendent. This may be necessary if the student feels that there has not been sufficient action by the administration of any given school.

No individual will suffer any reprisals for reporting any incidents of sexual harassment, making any complaints, or participating in any investigations.

It shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent to inform and educate school personnel about sexual harassment and the existence of Garrett County Public Schools policies.  It shall be the responsibility of the staff to address or report incidents of sexual harassment.
