EARLY ENTRANCE POLICY

Board Policy

The Board of Education, in accordance with state regulation, holds that generally students are best served when they enter school at the ages research has indicated is most conducive to long term success.  It is the presumption of the Board of Education that students will enter pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and 1st grade at the ages prescribed by the state regulation.  The Board of Education understands that under certain circumstances students may be granted early entrance to pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or 1st grade.

            Early Admission to Pre-Kindergarten (for children demonstrating developmental delay)

A parent or guardian may request early admission into pre-kindergarten if their child turns four (4) years of age after the entrance date (September 1) established by the Maryland State Department of Education and before January 1st of the school year for which they are requesting early admission.  Students must meet established criteria before being considered candidates for early admission to pre-kindergarten.  The procedure and criterion for early admission to pre-kindergarten can be obtained at the child’s home school or from the Office of Pupil Services.

A parent or guardian may request early admission into kindergarten if their child turns five (5) years of age after the entrance date (September 1) established by the Maryland State Department of Education and before January 1st of the school year for which they are requesting early admission.  Students must meet established criteria before being considered candidates for early admission to kindergarten.  The procedure and criterion for early admission to kindergarten can be obtained at the child’s home school or from the Office of Pupil Services.     

            Early Admission to First Grade (for children demonstrating advanced development)

A parent or guardian may request early admission into first grade if their child turns six (6) years of age after the entrance date * established by the Maryland State Department of Education and before January 1st of the school year for which they are requesting early admission.  Students must meet established criteria before being considered candidates for early admission to first grade.  The procedure and criterion for early admission to first grade can be obtained at the child’s home school or from the Office of Pupil Services.
