Requests for Participation of School Students in Contests

Administrative Procedure

All requests for permission of Garrett County school students to participate in contests (essay, poster, coloring, pictures, etc.) by group's outside of the school system such as business, community or local chapters of national organizations, will be directed by the sponsoring organization to the school principals of those schools which the sponsoring agencies desire to participate.

Each school principal will either approve or reject the request, based upon his/her evaluation of the following:

  1. The relevancy of contest to student's curriculum at the time of the request.
  2. The cost of materials and media involved.
  3. The student's class time involved in the task.
  4. The staff's time involved in the project.
  5. The repetitiveness of the task in relation to similar contests.

If the principal decides to reject the request, he/she will notify the sponsoring agency of his/her decision and the reason for the decision.

If the request is tentatively approved by the principal, he/she will present the contest material to the appropriate teacher(s) who will decide to approve or reject the request, based upon the same evaluative criteria.

The teacher will approve or reject, based upon his/her evaluation of the above criteria. The teacher will notify the principal of his/her decision. The principal will notify the sponsoring agency of the decision. If the request is denied, the reason for doing so will be given to the sponsoring agency.
