CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Board Policy
Schools seek volunteer service to enhance and provide activities and programs for students. Students and parents should be confident that those school activities and programs which involve volunteers provide a safe environment for students. Under Maryland law, a public school facility may require a criminal background check of individuals (employees and volunteers) who work with children. Therefore, the Garrett County Public Schools establishes guidelines to provide for documentation, criminal background checks and approval of individuals who provide volunteer services, as defined in the accompanying procedures. These procedures will be phased-in during the 2005-2006 school year, and will be required beginning with the 2006-2007 school year.
