PROGRAMS LEADING TO HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION

Board Policy

            The public high schools of Garrett County currently provide the following programs for high school completion which are within the guidelines defined by the Maryland State Department of Education:

 (1)       THE REGULAR PROGRAM: This program requires enrollment in an educational program for 4 years beyond grade 8 unless alternatives B and C of COMAR 13A.03.02.10 (number 3 and 4 below) or B of COMAR 13A.03.02.11 (number 5 below) is satisfied.

(2)      THE EVENING HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM: This program, in addition to the requirements of THE REGULAR PROGRAM offers regular curriculum courses.  (See 344.522)

(3)    THE EARLY COLLEGE ADMISSION PROGRAM: This alternative program, in addition to the requirements of THE REGULAR PROGRAM, requires a request for permission to take the fourth year at an approved college of the studentís choice.  (See 344.521)

(4)                                       (4)       EARLY ADMISSION TO APPROVED VOCATIONAL, TECHNICAL, OR OTHER POST-                        SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM: This alternative program, in addition to the requirements of THE

 REG                          REGULAR PROGRAM, requires a request for permission to take the fourth year at an approved vocational,                         technical, or other post-secondary school of the studentís choice.  (See 344.521)

 

                           (5)      WAIVER OF THE SENIOR YEAR: This alternative program, in addition to the requirements of THE          

                        REGULAR PROGRAM, requires a request for permission to waive the fourth year enrollment requirement.

(6)      THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM: This program provides essential services offering students with disabilities the opportunity to earn the Maryland High School Diploma, receive the Maryland High School Certificate, or continue in instructional programs until the age of 21 years.

(7)      THE RELEASED TIME-SUPPLEMENTARY COLLEGE PROGRAM DURING THE SENIOR YEAR: This modified schedule program allows a student in the senior year at a Garrett County public high school to elect, through the usual scheduling procedures of the school, to take the requirements for high school graduation and be released to take one or more classes at an approved college of the studentís choice the remainder of the studentís school day or during the evening.    (See 344.521)

(8)      THE RELEASED TIME-MODIFIED SCHEDULE PROGRAM DURING THE SENIOR YEAR:  This modified schedule program allows a student in the senior year at a Garrett County public high school to request to be released during the school day if all graduation credit requirements are being met. 

(9)      THE RELEASED TIME-SEVERE HARDSHIP PROGRAM: This modified schedule program is for students who may have severe hardships as determined by the administration of a Garrett County public high school.    (See 344.521)

(10)     SCHOOL-TO-CAREERS PROGRAM: This program allows a student in the senior year at a Garrett County public high school to request to be released during the school day to School-To-Careers work experience or training program which supplements, augments, and/or allows the student to continue his/her regular educational program as a full time equivalent student.  Students released through such programs as School-To-Careers or Marketing must be supervised by appropriate staff members.  Other students must submit to the recommending guidance counselor each nine weeks a report of verification of continued employment or training.  Students ceasing employment or training experiences during the school term must return to school to be reassigned to an appropriate school or placement program.
