End of the Year Instructional Activities

Administrative Procedure

In order to bring the school year to a meaningful close the following procedures will apply to the various schools under the control of the County Public Schools.

Final Examinations

Elementary Schools (Grades PK/K to 5)

Appropriate instructional activities will be carried out by the instructional staff in accordance with the plans submitted to the Executive Director of Instruction.

Middle Schools (Grades 6 to 8)

A final comprehensive examination of all subject matter material will be given in the four major content areas----language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies. The final examination will be averaged along with other grades earned during the final reporting period. This final examination should not carry a disproportionate weight toward the determination of the grade for the final reporting period.

It should be noted that for some special education students (those following the Life Skills Program of Studies) final examinations may be inappropriate. However, a final assessment of progress toward attainment of I.E.P. objectives would be appropriate.

High Schools (Grades 9 to 12)

A comprehensive, final examination will be given at the end of all classes be they of one semester's length or two semesters' length. The final comprehensive examination grade will count as 20% of the final grade of any particular class.

All final examinations will be graded by the teacher/s involved and the scores identifiably recorded in the grade book of the teacher, which is collected at the end of the school year. The grade also will be separately recorded on the report card.

It should be noted that for some special education students (those following the Life Skills Program of Studies) final examinations may be inappropriate. However, a final assessment of progress toward attainment of I.E.P. objectives would be appropriate.

School Schedule

Students will be dismissed two hours early on each of the last three days of school.  Instruction and/or final exams are to be scheduled during the last three days of school to make optimal use of student time.

At the high and middle schools, students will be permitted to make up final exams only for the following reasons: death in the immediate family, illness of student, court summons, or quarantine. Students will be required to complete all final exams no later than the final teacher work day unless one of the above reasons precludes this from occurring. In such cases, arrangements must be made with the principal.

Report cards will be mailed home after the final teacher work day.

Each principal must forward by May 15 to the Executive Director of Instruction (copy to the Superintendent) a brief description of the plans for the last three student days. The description should include:
