Mrs. Dawna Ashby Named Director of Elementary and Early Childhood Education

Ms. Barbara Baker, Superintendent of Schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Dawna Ashby to the position of Director of Elementary and Early Childhood Education beginning in the 2021-22 school year. Mrs. Ashby holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Fairmont State University and a Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision from West Virginia University. She also holds a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I and II endorsements.
Mrs. Ashby has been employed by Garrett County Public Schools since 2008. She has served as the Principal of Broad Ford Elementary School from 2011 to the present. Mrs. Ashby was the Principal of Friendsville Elementary School from 2010-11 and a Gear-Up Coordinator for Northern and Southern High Schools from 2008-2010. She was also a teacher at Terra Alta Elementary and Middle School from 1998-2008.
Superintendent Baker stated, “We are excited to welcome Mrs. Ashby to our system-wide administrative team. She brings significant experience to her new position including ten years as an elementary school principal. Her time serving in that capacity ensures that she will be able to easily transition to the director position. Mrs. Ashby has a positive, can-do attitude that parents, students, and staff members will appreciate. She will work tirelessly to ensure that each elementary school has the resources necessary to not only close achievement gaps but also to enrich each student’s elementary school years.”
While serving in various roles within the school system, Mrs. Ashby has been trained in PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), RTI (Response to Intervention), CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute), and Orton-Gillingham. In addition, she has National Mentor Training and Certification and has coached high school sports for many years.
