Board of Education Recognitions During Meeting on April 13, 2021

The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged several recognitions and proclamations at its recent Board meeting on April 13, 2021.
 

2021 Carson Scholars

Mr. Jason VanSickle, Board Member, recognized Lauryn Bishoff, 10th grader at Southern Garrett High School, Laura Huelskamp, 9th grader at Northern Garrett High School, and Serena Lewis, 11th grader at Southern Garrett High School (unable to attend), for being named 2021 Carson Scholars. The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. Scholarship winners receive the honor of being named “Carson Scholars” and are awarded an Olympic-sized medal and a trophy for their school to celebrate their accomplishments.

National History Day Competition Award Winner – Laura Huelskamp

Mr. Jason VanSickle, Board Member, recognized Laura Huelskamp, student at Northern High School, for winning the National History Day Competition. The National History Day contest, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was held June 12-20, 2020. She was awarded first place in the Junior Individual Exhibits with her exhibit “Aren't Lights Grand?: Breaking Barriers in History with Rural Electrification”.

Teacher Appreciation Week Proclamation – May 3-7, 2021

Mr. Rodney Glotfelty, Board Member, recognized Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3-7, 2021, by reading a proclamation. Ardra Sharpless, 8th Grade Science Teacher at Southern Middle School, received the proclamation on behalf of all GCPS teachers.

Recognition of Retired Board Member – Charlotte Sebold

Dr. Matthew Paugh, Board Member, recognized Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, former Board Member, who retired from the Garrett County Board of Education after 28 years of service. The Board presented Mrs. Sebold with a gift and read a proclamation for Mrs. Sebold's years of service to the Board of Education. The Board also presented to Jarrett Miller, Student Member, the first annual Charlotte A. Sebold Scholarship Award of $500.
