Proposed School Health Materials on Display for Review Through February 7, 2020

Proposed new health materials for use in the school curriculum are on display for review by the general public. The materials are available for review at the Central Office in Oakland, Northern Garrett High School in Accident, and The Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland from January 15, 2020 until February 7, 2020. At the three locations, feedback forms are available for parents and staff to complete after reviewing the health materials. Please feel free to provide input via the feedback form or email comments to: . The Board will take action on the materials at the February 11, 2020, Board of Education Meeting.
The health materials for review include online video resources from that will be used by health teachers, guidance counselors, and nurses. Fourth, fifth, and seventh grade lessons are taught gender separate, so some of the following videos are labeled for boys or girls. Six short videos were recommended by the Advisory Committee for use at specific grade levels. “Feeling Depressed, Happy, and Other Emotions” and “Oh No BO –Changing Bodies” (boys) are recommended for grades 4,5,6,7, & 8. “Menstruation, What to Expect” (girls) is recommended for grades 4 and 5. “All About Getting Your Period”(girls) and “Depression and Anxiety” is recommended for grades 6,7, and 8. “Pregnancy and Reproduction” is recommended for grade 8.
Also, there are proposed posters which provide updated information on STD/STI facts, birth control choices, and abstinence. They are recommended for use by health teachers for grades 7,8, and high school.
