Tick Monitoring for Fall Activities

Last Updated on Aug 30, 2019 at 12:38pm | Public Information Office

The Hickory Environmental Education Center has been working with the Garrett County Health Department to monitor ticks and their increased numbers in Garrett County. From the tick monitoring, it shows that the fall hatch is underway. For outdoor activities, general precautions are:
  • Stay in mowed areas
  • Avoid tall grass, ferns, and low hanging limbs
  • Children should avoid rolling on the ground
  • Check arms and legs when returning indoors
  • Parents should inspect children in the evening after playing outside.
This collaborative project has been helpful to the school principals and school health professionals in keeping students free of tick borne illnesses. We hope this information is helpful to parents and families as well.
