Ms. Barbara Baker, Superintendent of Schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John Hummel to the position of principal at Southern Middle School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Hummel holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Youth Ministries from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, and a Master of Education Degree in School Counseling from Frostburg State University. He also holds a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrator I and II, and School Counseling endorsements.
Mr. Hummel has been employed with Garrett County Public Schools since 2008. He served as a guidance counselor from 2008 until 2017 at Northern Garrett High School before becoming the Assistant Principal there. Superintendent Baker stated, “Mr. Hummel brings a unique combination of administrative and guidance experience to the position of principal. He has helped lead district initiatives and has attended both local and statewide professional development opportunities for administrators. I believe he will be an excellent addition to Southern Middle School and will work very well with the staff, students, and families”.
In addition to his various roles within the school system, Mr. Hummel has been a Crisis Intervention Counselor at the Garrett Regional Medical Center since 2013. He has also worked as a Mobile Therapist/ Behavior Specialist Consultant in Somerset, PA, a school counselor at Warm Springs Intermediate School in Berkeley Springs, WV, and at the Maryland Salem Children’s Trust as an Education Coordinator.
Mrs. Brooks Elliott, the outgoing principal of Southern Middle School, has accepted the position of Coordinator of Special Programs at the central office.
