Two FIRST Robotics Teams Representing GCPS at the FIRST World Championship in Detroit

Two teams from the Garrett County Public School system will be competing in Detroit - FRC Team 1629, GaCo, and FTC Team 9445, Loading, a team from Northern High School. Jeremy and Amy Perando and Laurie Walker are coaches of Team Loading.
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629, GaCo, competed at the Chesapeake District Championship last weekend at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where 58 teams qualified to compete from Maryland, Virginia, and D.C.
The team was the recipient of a "Chairman's Awards" which automatically qualified the team to compete at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, April 24-27, 2019. Even without the award, GaCo had more than enough points to qualify for the world championship, finishing 8th in the district. The robot was the #2 seed after qualification matches. The #1 seed was FRC 836, the RoboBees, from St. Mary's County, whose head mentor is a GaCo alumnus.
The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award in FIRST. It honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.
While in Detroit, GaCo students will also be presenting at the FIRST Conference, which is concurrent with the Championship and, once again, competing for the Championship Chairman's Award among the other award winners from around the world.
The 4-H/GEARS sponsored FTC team 2624, G-Force, will also be competing in Detroit.
GaCo’s Eggstravaganza will be held this Friday, April 19, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon in front of the Central Office Building on Second Street in Oakland. Just in time for Easter, the team will have a shoeshine stand, as well as a variety of STEM related activities for youngsters, such as a LEGO machine that decorates Easter Eggs.
