GCPS Coding Competition Announced to Celebrate Digital Learning Day

Last Updated on Feb 22, 2018 at 3:13pm | Public Information Office

To help celebrate Digital Learning Day, Garrett County Public Schools announces its 2018 “See a Need - Make a Solution” coding competition. The competition is open to all fifth through twelfth grade students living in Garrett County. The contest will be broken into two divisions with one division for grades 5 through 8 and the other for grades 9 through 12.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage students to identify a need in their community that can be met through application of their computer programming or coding skills. Students can develop their solution through any coding language they choose, including online tools such as Scratch and vCalc. Students can register individually or as a team of two.

Schools across the nation are celebrating Digital Learning Day, each in its own way. According to Superintendent Barbara Baker, “Garrett County has taken a lead on the integration of coding in public school instruction throughout Maryland.” She continues, “Garrett County schools are developing unique approaches to expose students to the benefits of coding which will better prepare them for their future success and the success of others.” According to Governor Larry Hogan, there are currently nearly 20,000 openings for high-paying computing-related jobs in Maryland.
