Four FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams will advance to the Maryland State FLL Championship in February on the campus of UMBC. Of the twenty-three teams which competed at the Mountain Maryland Qualifier on December 9, 2017, at Northern Garrett High School, four were selected to represent the Mountain Maryland Qualifier at the State Championship. Teams were judged based on overall performance in three areas: Project, Robot Design, and Teamwork.
The four teams advancing are NeXT GEN, iLEGO, Turbo Technology, and the Cre8tors. NeXT GEN received the tournament’s first place Champion’s Award, and iLEGO was selected for the second place Champion’s Award. iLEGO also earned the top spot in Robot Performance with the Polar Bots placing second. The Cre8tors were selected for the first place spot in Teamwork with Team R.E.D. coming in second. First and second place Project Awards were earned by ForEV3r Rams and the BW Spartans, respectively. Turbo Technology captured the first place Robot Design Award, while the Robo Pups came in second in Robot Design. Three teams each received Judges Awards. Those teams were Washington Middle School, South Penn Panthers, and Kit Kat Attack.
All twenty-three teams competing in the Mountain Maryland Qualifier were from Allegany and Garrett County. This was the ninth annual qualification event which Garrett County’s High School Robotics Team 1629, GaCo, conducted for local FLL teams. The Mountain Maryland Qualifier is always held on the second Saturday of December. Although Saturday’s event was held at Northern Garrett High School, next year’s location is yet to be determined.
