Ruth Enlow Library Partners with the GC Public Schools to Offer Student Cards

In an effort to make library online resources available to students in Garrett County, the Ruth Enlow Library and Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) have partnered to provide a library card for all students enrolled in the county schools. This card will enable students to access the library’s electronic resources and provides limited access to the library’s physical resources.

“All students will be provided with a library account based on their student ID in lieu of a library card number,” noted Thomas Vose, the library’s director. This card will enable students to access online library resources and check out up to three books at a time. Materials checked out to these accounts will not incur overdue fines or lost fees.  If materials are lost or damaged, the limit to physical borrowing privileges will be reduced by each item lost or damaged (e.g., a student with one damaged book will be able to check out only two books going forward), but online access will remain.

Superintendent of Garrett County Schools Barbara Baker expressed her appreciation to her staff and to Mr. Vose for expanding this partnership. Ms. Baker stated, “We have been exploring options for several years that would enable our students to have improved access to the Ruth Enlow resources. This is a win-win solution for both the library and the students and families of Garrett County Schools.”

Possession of a student account does not preclude students from simultaneously obtaining a full library card with parental permission. Parents may submit a written request that their child not be permitted to check out books. All student accounts will be terminated when the student is no longer enrolled with GCPS, and at that time, students may obtain a library card according to library policy.
