The Garrett County Board of Education made two recognitions and 2 proclamations at its meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2017.
Student Artwork Recognitions
Dr. Nathan Sorber, Board Member, recognized students’ art work from the Student Arts Fair, from April 2017, and purchased by Garrett County Public Schools to be displayed in the central office. Dr. Sorber recognized the following students and their artwork:
Emillie Baker, Scot Bowman, Zoey Hardesty, Graclyn Howdershelt, Katie Lloyd, Jazzmen Lynch, and Kenzie Shiflett.

Maryland Character Education School of the Year Awards
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board Vice President, presented the Character Education of the Year Awards to Accident Elementary, Broad Ford Elementary, and Northern Middle Schools for the quality of their comprehensive character education programs. The Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University held the 2017 Awards Conference on October 5th to honor schools throughout Maryland who have instituted, developed, and are continuing comprehensive character education initiatives in their school communities. Representatives from each school traveled to Stevenson University for presentations on character education programs and to receive the award. The schools received a specially designed School of the Year Character Education banner to be displayed, along with a certificate of recognition from the Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University.

National School Bus Week Proclamation – October 16-20, 2017
Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, Board Member, recognized National School Bus Safety Week: October 16-20, 2017, with a proclamation. The proclamation was presented to Mr. Richard Wesolowski, Director of Transportation. The Board proclaimed the third full week in October as National School Bus Safety Week, and encouraged all citizens to recognize the hard work and dedication of pupil transportation professionals, the excellent safety record of school bus drivers, the benefits of school bus driver training, the importance of students obeying safety rules at all times, and the need for heightened vigilance on the part of all vehicle drivers when in the vicinity of school buses.

I Can Swim Program Proclamation – Month of October
Mr. Thomas Woods, Board Member, recognized the I Can Swim! Program, in partnership with Garrett College, by presenting a proclamation for the month of October. Accepting the proclamation were Cherie Krug, Executive Director of Garrett College Foundation, Penny Proudfoot, Director of Elementary Education, and Alison Sweitzer, Director of Finance. In September 2011, Garrett College began providing free American Red Cross basic swimming and water safety instruction for all kindergarten children. Garrett County Public Schools provides school bus transportation for the children to the college campus as part of their daily schedule for a four day active learning program during the regular school week. Every child participating in the program receives an I Can Swim! certificate and a one-year discount on a family membership to the CARC, along with four free one-day swimming passes. At the conclusion of its fifth year, the program has graduated over 1,900 Garrett County kindergarten students.
