FRC 1629, Garrett Coalition (GaCo) returned from the FIRST Championship in St. Louis during April 26-29 finishing 39th in its division with a record of 5-5-0 and being selected to compete with the 5th seeded team playoff rounds before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.  While in St. Louis, the team also presented a session at the FIRST Conference, which was held in conjunction with the Championship.

Upon returning from St. Louis, GaCo students attended the Common Ground Conference, May 3-4, in Ocean City, Maryland.  The team conducted “Maker” activities during the conference’s “Maker Faire” and represented FIRST Robotics and LEGO Education on the conference’s exhibit floor.  GaCo students gained valuable experience as they shared FIRST and the power of LEGO in the classroom with educators from across Maryland.  Immediately following Common Ground, GaCo students participated in Frostburg State University’s STEM Fest, May 6, working with younger students to prepare them for success in STEM.

Prior to the end of the school year, GaCo students hope to visit every third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms in Garrett County to give students an opportunity to participate in one of the team’s STEM lessons known as STEM Waypoints.  These lessons, designed by GaCo, result in students building a LEGO model which helps apply math concepts they have learned in the 3rd and 5th grades. GaCo students provide 4th grade students an introduction to binary numbers which culminates in students receiving a set of five “GaCo Cards” that can be used to “guess” a number someone is thinking. These lessons are at the core of GaCo’s vision of “STEM Ready” kids.

The weekend preceding the Championship event in St. Louis, GaCo represented FIRST and Garrett County Public Schools at the National Math Festival in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, April 22.
