FIRST Robotics Team 1629, the Garrett Coalition (GaCo), will be hosting an Easter Shoe Shine and Egg Painting fundraiser on Friday, April 14, 2017 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in front of the Board of Education Central Office Building at 40 South Second Street in Oakland, MD.

Along with shining shoes, the team will have “hands on” Easter themed STEM related activities for youngsters of all ages. Custom built LEGO Egg painting machines will be on hand to create designs on hard boiled eggs. In addition to egg painting, the event will feature sidewalk geometric (or Euclidean) “egg” constructions from just using string, a straightedge, and chalk. The team will also be displaying its 40”x50” LEGO map of Garrett County, which features animations representing many of the county’s various communities all powered from a single power source. Donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be used to help cover costs for the team’s 2017 season.

This event comes at the conclusion of 1629’s thirteenth season in which the team built a robot to compete in this year’s game “FIRST Steamworks.” The team qualified to compete in the Chesapeake District Championship this weekend, April 6-7, 2017, by being the recipient of the Chairman’s Award at a qualification event in which it competed last month. The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award in FIRST which honors a team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. This year, the Chesapeake District Championship is being held at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia. The event will be webcast live with links accessible through the team’s website at .
