Heather Roth, teacher at Broad Ford and Crellin Elementary Schools, has been named the 2017-18 Garrett County Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Roth teaches general music, chorus, and band at both schools.  She also conducts the Blazing Bobcat Orff Ensemble at Broad Ford and Rhythm and Rubbish at Crellin. She has been employed by Garrett County Public Schools since 2006, teaching music at Swan Meadow, Kitzmiller, and Yough Glades Elementary Schools.  She has also served as an assistant band director at Southern Garrett High School.

Ms. Roth graduated from West Virginia University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Music.  She then completed a Master of Music degree in 2005.  Heather indicated, “My goal is for my students to acquire essential music skills in a safe learning environment where imagination is encouraged.  When this is achieved, their self-confidence and appreciation for the arts is enhanced.”

Ms. Roth has a certificate for Orff Schulwerk Levels I and II from the University of Kentucky .  She is a member of the Garrett County Education Association and a Crellin Elementary Teacher Advisory Group Representative.  She was named the 2015 Oakland Elks Lodge Elementary Teacher of the Year.  She is a member of the Garrett Choral Society, the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, President of the Young Women Organization – Oakland Branch, and a coach in the Mountaintop Soccer Assocation.

Heather stated, “Students must be exposed to quality music education from the earliest years of their formal education.  Children must be active music makers – immersed in the language of music.”

As Heather considers real world applications, she stated, “I connect my students to the world around them by exposing them to a variety of different genres, cultures, history, and people through music.  By giving student opportunities to learn about, experience, and perform a vast musical repertoire, they become part of a rich musical legacy.  I search out opportunities to enable my student to connect what we learn in class to the outside world.”
