On Monday, February 27 th, three students from Garrett County's High School Robotics Team 1629 conducted a three hour Pre-Conference Workshop for the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Conference on Personalized Learning (MACPL) at the Waterfront Marriot in Baltimore. Approximately 14 educators from across the mid-Atlantic and MSDE attended the session and were able to build and keep versions of the team's LEGO Top Spinners and Golden Ratio Calipers that the team uses to help all students in Garrett County become STEM Ready (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

Patrick Lee (junior at Southern High), Jessica Storck (sophomore at Southern High) and McKenna Fazenbaker (senior at Northern High) did an outstanding job and received rave reviews from attendees. The team provided the workshop at the request of the Maryland State Department of Education.

In the “Every Student STEM Ready” session, the attendees learned how Garrett County leverages its high school’s FIRST robotics team to help every student become STEM Ready. The students demonstrated how hands-on activities are incorporated into learning activities which are conducted by high school students in Garrett County’s elementary classrooms. The attendees experienced hands-on strategies for developing skills essential for a child’s success in STEM - primarily through engagement and making connections through the use of LEGO machines.

Garrett County's High School Robotics Team 1629 is preparing for its first event of the season this weekend in Blacksburg, Virginia.
