The Garrett County College Expo, sponsored by Garrett County Public Schools and Garrett College, will be held on Monday, October 10, at the Garrett College Community Aquatic and Recreation Complex (CARC) Gymnasium in McHenry. Attendees can visit with college representatives from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. “Our annual College Expo provides a great opportunity for students and parents to learn about financial aid and to speak with a number of representatives from technical institutions and colleges, all provided locally in one evening,” stated Dr. Phil Lauver, Supervisor of Pupil Services for Garrett County Public Schools. The event is free and open to the public, and students of all ages are encouraged to attend. Home school and private school students are also welcome to attend.
The program begins at 6:00 p.m. with a financial aid presentation, which is also held in the CARC gymnasium. Financial Aid representatives from Garrett College will be on hand to answer questions about federal, state, and local scholarships and aid programs, including the Garrett County Scholarship Program. A scholarship booklet with information on nearly 100 other scholarship opportunities will be available, courtesy of Garrett County Public Schools.
The Garrett County College Expo provides a great opportunity for students and parents to explore the many options for furthering education in the region. To date, more than 30 colleges and universities from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia have registered to attend the Expo. The event usually attracts approximately 40 institutions. College representatives will share information on a wide variety of programs of study, student support, athletic opportunities, and financial assistance.
“The College Expo provides a great opportunity for students and parents to be able to speak one-on-one with college representatives to get their questions answered,” explained Melissa Wass, Coordinator of Admissions at Garrett College. “This is not only important for high school seniors and juniors, but also for freshman and sophomores, who may already be starting the process of gathering information and thinking about programs of study and/or institutions they are interested in attending once they graduate high school.”
Students who attend the Garrett County College Expo will be eligible to register for scholarship prizes. One senior from Northern Garrett High School and one from Southern Garrett High School will be selected to receive a $500 scholarship, which can be used at any college or university. Second place winners from each school will be awarded a $250 scholarship. The Garrett College Foundation will also award two book scholarships.
The Garrett College CARC gymnasium is located on Mosser Road, just beyond the college’s main campus in McHenry. For additional information about the upcoming Garrett County College Expo, persons may contact the Garrett College Office of Admissions at 301-387-3044 or toll-free 866-554-2773 and visit
