Board of Education Announces Three Finalists for Garrett County Superintendent of Schools; Each Finalist to Have “Day in the District” Next Week
The Garrett County Board of Education has announced the names of the three finalists for the next Garrett County Superintendent of Schools, and will give each finalist a busy “Day in the District” next week. Members of focus groups that will participate in interviewing the finalists learned the names of the finalists after an orientation and preparation meeting on Wednesday, June 8.
The finalists, in order of the date for their “Day in the District,” are:
Monday, June 13: Dr. Christopher R. Quinn has been the Executive Director of Curriculum, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and Director of Instructional Services in the Stafford County Public Schools, VA, since 2005. He received a B.A. and Master’s degrees from Augusta College. In 1988, he received a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Quinn’s professional experience in Georgia includes middle and high school teacher, high school assistant principal, middle and high school principal, curriculum director, superintendent, and executive assistant to the superintendent. In addition, he has served as assistant superintendent in the Buffalo City Schools, NY.
"The search for a new Superintendent of Garrett County Public Schools has been the Board's top priority. We are excited to bring forth three qualified finalists," Board President Charlotte Sebold said. "We appreciate the investment our community is making by participating in focus groups and providing input to the Board. We plan on making a decision soon and helping our new Superintendent move forward with our vision for Garrett County Public Schools."
The Board’s goal is to choose the top candidate for superintendent by June 21, and vote to appoint the chosen candidate. The new superintendent would officially start on July 1, 2016.
Superintendent Dr. Janet Wilson informed the Board in February 2016 that she would not seek re-appointment after her four-year contract ends June 30, 2016. The Board of Education brought in the expertise of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) to conduct the search process. MABE held stakeholder input sessions in March to gather the input that shaped the search for a new superintendent.
Starting in April, the superintendent opening was widely posted so that qualified local, state, and national candidates could apply, with the first consideration of applications by MABE on May 9. The Board conducted two rounds of interviews this spring to select the three finalists for extensive interviews which will be held June 13-15 with various stakeholder groups. These groups will provide input to the Board as it prepares to choose a new superintendent.
