Last Updated on May 19, 2016 at 11:13am | Public Information Office

Southern Garrett High School’s Custodial Staff and GCPS Maintenance Department were the recipients of the 2016 Silver Hammer Award. Maryland’s Comptroller Peter Franchot visited Southern High School on May 18 and presented the awards to both groups. Southern High School was nominated for the award by Matthew Zimmerman, Garrett County Public Schools’ Assistant Manager of Operations. The nomination praises the hard work and dedication of the custodial staff and the collaborative learning environment that is created by a clean, safe, and healthy school.

Mr. Franchot created the Silver Hammer Award in 2010 to ensure that Maryland recognizes schools demonstrating fiscal prudence through superior school facility maintenance. In the public schools across the state, he has seen many examples of effective maintenance, including simple and affordable investments like a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, or a good power washing.

In addition to providing communities with a renewed sense of pride in their schools, research has confirmed the obvious – that a clean, attractive and comfortable facilities have a positive impact on student performance. The Silver Hammer Award is presented in each of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City.
