The office of Congressman John Delaney recently recognized Maryland's 6th Congressional District high school art  students through participation  in a nationwide contest. A drawing from Southern Garrett High School’s Morgan Winegardner was selected for entry while on display at the annual Garrett County Student Arts Fair. Her work,  entitled  “Still Life with Cans”,  won first place in the Drawing category for District 6. While Ms. Winegardner was not the overall winner, Congressman Delaney and members of his staff were so impressed with the quality of the drawing and the level of her talent that they requested her work to hang in their district office located in Gaithersburg for the coming year.

Through Comptroller Peter Franchot’s visits to public schools across the state, he has seen many examples where effective maintenance (including simple and affordable investments like a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting or a good power washing) has made a world of difference in buildings. In addition to providing communities with a renewed sense of pride in its schools, clean, attractive, and comfortable facilities have a positive impact on student performance. Established in 2010 to recognize schools for money-saving initiatives and superior maintenance, the award is presented in each of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City.
