Board of Education Proclamations at Meeting on 11-10-15

The Garrett County Board of Education presented several proclamations at its recent Board meeting on November 10, 2015.
 

Veterans Day Recognition - November 11, 2015
At the recent Board of Education meeting, Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, Board Vice President, read a Veterans Day Proclamation in honor of Veterans Day, November 11, 2015, which was signed by Board members and Dr. Janet Wilson, Superintendent of Schools.  Mrs. Sebold presented the proclamation to army veteran, SPC Bob Hensley.

Though Garrett County Public Schools were in session on Veterans Day, all schools conducted appropriate patriotic exercises and activities to honor the veterans in accordance with Title 07, Section 103 and Section 105 of the Maryland Education Code.
 
Some patriotic activities in the elementary schools this year included Veterans Day breakfast for the veterans; assemblies with skits, poetry, songs, posters, and thank you notes and letters; research and student-made presentations; and the reading of books and promotion of discussions on the topic.
 
In the middle schools, activities included assembly programs; singing of patriotic songs; poetry; reading of articles; viewing of various videos regarding freedom; writing thank you letters to veterans/soldiers; and participating in a walk-a-thon to raise money for the Maryland Chapter of Wounded Warriors Foundation.
 
At the high school level, there were ceremonies and programs; Veterans Day lunches; history lessons; JROTC programs supporting community Veteran's Day activities throughout the county, including parades; and presentations of the National Colors at Veteran's Day ceremony events at the Wisp Resort and the CARC.
 

American Education Week Proclamation – November 16-20, 2015
Mr. Thomas Carr, Board Member, read a Proclamation in honor of American Education Week, November 16-20, 2015, which was signed by Board members and Dr. Wilson, Superintendent of Schools.  The Proclamation was a salute to the dedicated education employees of Garrett County Public Schools.  Mr. Carr presented the Proclamation to Ms. Lynne Elmlinger, Garrett County Education Association President and teacher.

School Psychologist Week Proclamation – November 9-13, 2015
Mrs. Cynthia Downton, Board Member, recognized School Psychologist Week, November 9 - 13, 2015, which was signed by Board members and Dr. Janet Wilson.  Mrs. Downton presented the proclamation to Dr. Phil Lauver, Supervisor of Pupil Services, and Angie Harrison, psychologist.

National Education Support Professionals Day Proclamation – November 18, 2015
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board President, read a Proclamation in honor of National Education Support Professionals Day - November 18, 2015, which was signed by Board members and Dr. Janet Wilson, Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Paugh presented the proclamation to Ms. Lois Lipscomb, ESP Vice President of the GCEA Executive Board, and Ms. Brenda Yommer, President of the Garrett County Federation of Teachers – Head Custodians and Cafeteria Managers Unit.
