Board of Education Recognitions on June 10, 2015

The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged several recognitions at its recent Board meeting on June 10, 2015.
Machine Science State Award Recipient
Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, Board Vice President, recognized Zachery Shreve, 12th grade student from Southern High School, for winning 1st place (gold medal winner) in the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Technician category at the 42nd Annual Skills USA Maryland Leadership and Skills Championship.

Mr. Shreve will represent the state of Maryland at the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Louisville, Kentucky from June 22 – 26, 2015.

Maryland State SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year
Mrs. Cynthia Downton, Board member, recognized Mr. Loren Bowser, teacher at Southern High School, for winning the Maryland State Skills USA Advisor of the Year award.

Mr. Bowser has been the advisor of Southern’s Skills USA chapter since 1996. Initially nominated by Marjorie Kellman, MS, RN, and lead advisor for Skills USA at Washington County Technical High School, Hagerstown, Mr. Bowser was one of six finalists vying for this award. He is now in the running for the national award of the same name. Ms. Kellman said that Mr. Bowser has been a mentor to her since her beginnings in Skills USA. Mr. Bowser has trained a number of students at Southern High School who have gone on to achieve state championships in Skills-USA, and have become national competitors. He was a state winning cabinet maker himself, having competed at the national level three times representing Maryland.

1st Place Track and Field Winners – 2015 MPSSAA Championship
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board President, announced the 1st place state track and field winners from the 2015 MPSSAA Championship meet at Morgan State University.

Northrup Grumman Scholar
Mrs. Monica Rinker, Board member, recognized Ms. Emma Grace Shaffer, Southern High School, as the Garrett County recipient of the Northrop Grumman $10,000 college scholarship this year.

The Northrop Grumman Scholarship program helps support promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an approved engineering, computer science, mathematics or physics program. Through this scholarship effort, Northrop Grumman hopes to motivate some of the brightest and best students to consider the engineering professions.

A committee of Northrop Grumman employees select the Engineering Scholars winners. To be eligible, each scholarship applicant had to be a resident of Maryland and a 2015 graduating senior from a public or accredited private high school in the state. Applicants also had to have a minimum composite SAT score of 1,700 or ACT score of 27 and a minimum GPA of 3.5. The committee also takes into consideration work experience, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.

Ms. Shaffer will be recognized at the Northrop Grumman STEM Scholars Awards dinner on June 18, 2015, in Baltimore. Mr. James Maddy, Principal, will be attending the awards dinner on behalf of GCPS.
