Board of Education Recognitions - May 12, 2015

The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged several recognitions and proclamations at its recent Board meeting on May 12, 2015.
 
Southern High School Boys Cross Country Team
Mrs. Monica Rinker, Board Member, recognized Southern High School Boys Cross Country Team who won the 2014 Maryland 1A State Cross Country Championship. The Southern "Running" Rams were dominate in winning the Maryland State 1A Boys Cross Country State Championship on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Hereford High School. The Rams placed four runners in the top 10, and six in the top 20 to finish with 43 points, easily out pacing Bohemia Manor, the runners up, who finished with 81 points. Northern Garrett finished third overall with 91 points. Freshman Declan Horner finished in fourth place, while teammate Devan Hamrick finished fifth. Jake Koziarski and Greyson Messenger finished ninth and tenth respectively, while Joe Mousch and Aaron Rodeheaver ended the day in fifteenth and sixteenth place. All six runners were named to the All-State team by finishing in the top 20. The state championship is the program’s sixth, and first since winning its last of five straight in 1997.
 
                   
 
 
 
Wrestling State Champ and Top Competitors
Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, Board Vice President, recognized a state wrestling champion and top competitors from the state wrestling tournament. The MPSSAA State Wrestling Tournament was held at Cole Field House, University of Maryland on March 7 and 9, 2015. Garrett County had 2 wrestlers from Southern High and 3 wrestlers from Northern High participating in the state tournament. The following students were recognized for their exceptional placement in the state tournament:
     Devan Hamrick, a junior at Southern High School, was the 2A/1A state champion in the 120 pound weight class.
     Justin Opel, a senior at Northern High School, was the 2A/1A runner up (second place) in the 132 pound weight class.
     Joshua King, a senior at Southern High School, finished in 4th place at the 126 pound weight class.
 
                    
 
 
 
FIRST Robots Competition (FRC) Team 1629 and Demonstration
Mr. Thomas Carr, Board Member, recognized the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629, which competed at the FRC Championships in St. Louis, April 22-25, 2015, and placed 25th in the Carson Division.
 
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629, the Garrett Coalition or GaCo, was among 608 teams competing at the event which included eight divisions and teams from the U.S., Canada, Israel, China, Turkey, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, and the Netherlands.
 
GaCo double qualified to compete at the 2015 FRC Championship by winning the Greater Pittsburgh Regional during March 5-7 and being the recipient of the Chairman’s Award at the Chesapeake Regional in early April among the 58 teams competing. The team also won the Entrepreneurship Award, sponsored by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, which celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit by recognizing a team that has developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives.
 
During the FRC Championship, Northern Garrett High School Junior, Alexandra Miller, was named one of ten “Dean’s List” recipients from among approximately 120 finalists from 60 FRC regionals. The Dean’s List Award celebrates outstanding student leaders whose passion for and effectiveness in attaining FIRST ideals is exemplary.
 
                   
 
 
 
Southern High School Lady Rams Basketball Team
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board President, recognized Southern Garrett High School Lady Rams for winning the 2015 MPSSAA Regional Championship basketball game.  The Southern Rams girls’ basketball team won the Maryland 1A West Region championship after beating Smithsburg, 56-23, at Hagerstown Community College.
 
The team has celebrated three straight years of Maryland 1A West Region and Section titles, three Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference championships, two berths in the Maryland 1A state finals and one state title.
 
                     
 
 
 
 
Maryland Pupil Personnel Week Proclamation May 4-8, 2015
Mrs. Cindy Downton, Board Member, recognized Maryland Pupil Personnel Week, May 4 - 8, 2015 with a proclamation. Ms. Heather Raybold, Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW), and Dr. Phil Lauver, Director of Pupil Services, received the proclamation on behalf of Garrett County Public Schools PPWs.
 
                       
 
 

 
National School Nurse Day Proclamation – May 6, 2015
Mrs. Cindy Downton, Board Member, recognized School Nurse Day, May 6, 2015, with a proclamation.  Deann Kennell (Southern High); Sherry Farrell (Broad Ford Elementary); Rebecca Aiken, Lead Nurse (Northern High); Jennifer Knauff (Southern Middle); and Dr. Phil Lauver received the proclamation on behalf of the school nurses.
 
                       
 
 
 
 
Teacher Appreciation Week Proclamation
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board President, presented the Teacher Appreciation Week Proclamation.   Mr. Ryan Wolf, Southern High teacher and Garrett County Teacher of the Year for 2014-15, accepted the proclamation on behalf of all teachers.
