Board of Education Recognitions and Proclamations- April 14, 2015

The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged several recognitions and proclamations at its recent Board meeting on April 14, 2015.
 
School Library Month Proclamation
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board President, presented the School Library Month Proclamation to Mrs. Penny Proudfoot, Supervisor of Staff Development, Curriculum, and Media Services, and school media staff members in recognition of School Library Media Month for the month of April. School media staff include Ali Schilpp, Lorie Adams, Samantha Roller, Susan Duggan, and John Coffman.
 
Also, in honor of School Library Week, April 13-17, Mrs. Proudfoot invited the superintendent, Board members, and dignitaries to sign the Declaration for the Right to Libraries to signify that libraries are an important part of learning.

Student Bookmark Winners
Mrs. Penny Proudfoot, Supervisor of Staff Development, Curriculum, and Media Services, recognized the winners of a bookmark contest held at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for School Library Month.  Students designed bookmarks to celebrate the School Library Month in each school.  School staff members voted,  resulting in winners from each school.  The school level winners’ bookmarks were placed at Central Office where voting was completed for the overall winners. 
 
The elementary school design winner was Gracie Argabrite, Yough Glades Elementary School.  The middle school design winner was Noah Aiken, Northern Middle School.  The high school design winner was Meghan Fitzwater, Southern High School.
 
Each winner received a signed certificate from Dr. Wilson, Superintendent of Schools, and a gift certificate to the Book Market, in Oakland, which donated the certificates.

Week of the Young Child™ Proclamation
Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, Board member, presented the Week of the Young Child™ Proclamation to Mr. Stephen Knepp, Judy Center Education Coordinator.  Week of the Young Child™ is celebrated April 12-18.
 
The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association.
 
The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
