As of January 14, Garrett County Public Schools have been closed 7 days this school year because of inclement weather. At the Garrett County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, January 13, the Board decided to use March 30, 31, April 1, and 2 as make up days. Originally scheduled to be a Spring break, but designated as make up days if needed, the days will now be used as make up days as part of the 7 missed because of inclement weather.
The Board also voted to apply to MSDE for a waiver request to use Monday, April 6, as a possible make up day. Even if MSDE approves the waiver request, the Garrett County Board of Education voted to use April 6 as a make-up day only if the school system reaches a total number of snow days exceeding 10 days by February 13.
Also, below are a few school calendar changes for January as a result of days missed because of the inclement weather.
A Professional Day, with a 3 hour early student dismissal, was originally scheduled for Friday, January 16. It has now been moved to Wednesday, January 28 with a 3 hour early student dismissal. Should any additional days be missed due to inclement weather, the date will continue to move to the next full school day.
With the floating of the Professional Day, teachers will not have sufficient time to prepare grades for sharing with parents during the scheduled Parent/Teacher Conferences on Friday, January 23. Therefore, conferences have been rescheduled for Friday, January 30 to provide time for grading and conference preparation. There will be no school for students on January 30. Parent/Teacher Conference times will be from 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM.
Staff Development Day
Wednesday, January 21, will be a staff development day as scheduled with a 3 hour early student dismissal. If there would be a delayed opening for schools in the morning, then the schools would be in session all day for the students.
The end of the second grading term / first semester is now January 27. Should any additional days be missed due to inclement weather, the date will continue to move to the next school day.
Schools will now be in session on Friday, January 23. It will be a full day for students. It was originally closed for conferences.
