Board of Education Recognitions - November 17, 2014

The Garrett County Board of Education acknowledged several recognitions at its recent Board meeting on November 17, 2014.
American Education Week – November 17-21, 2014
Mrs. Charlotte Sebold, Board member, read a Proclamation in honor of American Education Week, November 16 – 22, which was signed by Board members and Dr. Wilson, Superintendent of Schools.  The Proclamation was a salute to the dedicated education employees of Garrett County Public Schools.  Garrett County Education Association members, Lynne Elmlinger and Lois Lipscomb, accepted the proclamation.  

School Psychologist Week – November 10-24, 2014
Mr. Matthew Paugh, Board member, recognized School Psychologist Week, November 10 - 14, 2014, by reading a proclamation.  Dr. Phil Lauver and Jennifer Kiselica, psychologist, accepted the proclamation. 

Education Support Professionals Day Proclamation– November 19, 2014
Mrs. Cynthia Downton, Board Member, recognized the educational support professionals by reading a proclamation for Educational Support Professionals Day on November 19, 2014.  Lynne Elmlinger and Lois Lipscomb accepted the proclamation on behalf of GCEA.  

Northern High School – National Blue Ribbon School Recognition
Mr. Thomas Carr, Board President, recognized Northern High School for being a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School. Northern Garrett High School was named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.  Northern High School, among other National Blue Ribbon Schools, was honored at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC, last week. The school received a plaque and flag to signify its exemplary status. Matt Eggleston, Vice Principal; Terry Stough, teacher; Adriana Fratz, student; and Gary Reichenbecher, Principal; accepted the award.

Northern High School Unified Tennis Team – State Silver Medal Winner
Mrs. Cynthia Downtown, Board Member, recognized Northern High School’s Unified Tennis Team for winning Silver medals at the state championship and winning the district tournament.  Northern Garrett High School Unified Tennis Team won Silver medals at the 2014 Interscholastic Unified Tennis State High School Championship on Monday, October 27, 2014, at Towson University. Close to 200 student-athletes from high schools representing 17 counties across the state advanced from local district tournaments to compete in the State Championship. Prior to the state tournament, Northern High School’s Unified Tennis team won its District Tournament Championship on October 20, 2014.  Team members are Sintija Anderson, Ashton Chapman, Jackie Chapman, Lauren Fuller, Justin Hershberger, Ally Landis, and Natalie Manges. Coaches are Linda Wengerd and George Lander.  Justin Hershberger and Ashton Chapman, team members, and Linda Wengerd, coach, accepted the recognitions.

Northern High School – National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School Award
Mr. Thomas Carr, Board President, recognized Northern High School for receiving the National Athletic Trainers' Association Safe Sports School Award.  Northern Garrett High School is the recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award for all of the Husky athletic programs. The award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment.  Mrs. Terry Stough, Athletic Trainer, and Gary Reichenbecher, Principal, accepted the recognition.
